METAPHORS IN THE MODE OF IRONY: THE CASE OF RIDICULE AND CRITICISM IN POLITICIZED DISCOURSE

Аннотация : 

Lithuanian humorous/ironic references in politicized discourse make use of a metaphoric mode, as the integration structures exploit the mental models of conceptual metaphors. Metaphor-based input spaces (target and source) contain cardinally contrary elements, the clash of which supports the ironic shift of meaning. The use of the con- ventionalized models of metaphors, salience of certain ironies, and shared background facilitates the perception of the ironic meaning. Though certain universal patterns of metaphor-based ironies are detected, it should be mentioned that the country retains its idiosyncrasy and conceptualizes the political life in its own specific way.
